Mostly sunny skies with afternoon temperatures in the low 70s are expected for the Valley today, but rain is in the forecast Tuesday through Thursday, forecasters said.

A storm system from Alaska will be making its way through Southern California on Tuesday afternoon, bringing unseasonably cool weather, rain and isolated thundershowers, said John Sherwin, a meteorologist with WeatherData Inc., which provides forecast information to The Times.

Today’s highs are expected to be 71 in Burbank, Woodland Hills, Chatsworth and Van Nuys. Morning lows today will be 56 in Burbank and slightly cooler in Woodland Hills, Chatsworth and Van Nuys.

Variably cloudy skies Tuesday morning will give way to mostly cloudy skies, rain and winds from the northwest at speeds of 10 to 20 mph, Sherwin said.

Tuesday’s morning lows are expected to be in the low to mid-50s, giving way to afternoon highs in the mid- to upper 60s. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected Wednesday, with afternoon temperatures in the low to mid-60s.

Morning lows Wednesday, Thursday and Friday are expected to range from the upper 40s to the low 50s.

On Thursday, isolated morning showers will give way to partly cloudy skies as the system makes its way out of the area, Sherwin said. Afternoons will continue to be cool, with temperatures peaking in the upper 60s, he said.

Friday’s forecast calls for slightly higher temperatures, ranging from the low to mid-70s, with mostly sunny skies.
