Rep. Kim

Re “In Detention, Kim Runs a Shadowy Race,” May 7: Either Rep. Jay Kim (R-Diamond Bar) knew and understood the law, yet knowingly violated the law, in which case he does not have the moral qualification to hold office; or, if he didn’t understand the law, he then lacks the cognitive qualifications to be part of crafting new legislation. Either way, he should resign immediately. He is an embarrassment to the Republican Party.

In the article on Rep. Kim, the allusion to the political comeback of President Bill Clinton deserves another look. We know how Clinton usually makes comebacks from scandals: through denials, stonewalling, cryptic half-admissions and massive counterattacks. But can Kim make a comeback after admitting guilt, serving the sentence and asking for forgiveness? All else being equal (both doing a great job in their elected posts), who gets the second chance, the contrite one or the lucky dodger?
