DWP Building Will Be Considered for Police Station Site

A building owned by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power is being considered as the site for a new San Fernando Valley police station.

The DWP’s Anthony Building at 8501 Arleta Ave. in Sun Valley is still being used by the power agency. But as the agency lays off workers to prepare for deregulation of the utility industry, the building may no longer be needed and could be leased or sold, said Kristin Vellandi, a spokeswoman for City Councilwoman Laura Chick.

The earthquake-damaged former campus of Alemany High School on Rinaldi Street in Mission Hills is also being studied as a potential site for the city’s 20th police station. Chick asked Friday that the Anthony Building be included in that study, and the council agreed.

While the DWP building is large and fairly new, police “will probably favor Alemany because it’s more central,” said Laura Johnson, commanding officer of the police facilities management division.
