3 Nations Unveil Regional Unity Goals
Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania unveiled ambitious plans for economic, political and social union. “I know it will be hard to meet the target, but our aim is to sign the treaty by November 1998,” Nicholas Biwott, Kenya’s minister for regional cooperation, told a news conference in Nairobi, the Kenyan capital. It will be the third time the East African neighbors have tried to harmonize their affairs. Biwott said the latest effort envisages a common trade market, aligned customs and tax systems, unified transport and telecommunication systems, a joint legislative assembly and a community court of appeal.
