1 Killed in Chain-Reaction Crash on Hollywood Freeway
One man died and another was in critical condition after a multi-vehicle crash Saturday afternoon on the Hollywood Freeway in North Hollywood.
The chain-reaction crash in the southbound lanes occurred about noon, Los Angeles City Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey said.
Three lanes of traffic were blocked until about 1:30 p.m. as rescue workers used the Jaws of Life to extricate the injured men from their compact car, Humphrey said.
Officials at Northridge Hospital Medical Center said one accident victim, who appeared to be in his early 20s, died from internal injuries. The man carried no identification, and the California Highway Patrol was still trying to identify him late Saturday.
CHP officers would not comment on the cause of the crash.
The other man in the car was taken to Providence Holy Cross Hospital, where he was reported in critical condition.
A 27-year-old woman in another vehicle was also injured in the pileup. She was released after treatment at Pacifica Hospital of the Valley, a hospital official said.
