Stone-throwing clashes between Israelis and Palestinians broke out Saturday in Jerusalem and the West Bank city of Hebron. Eighteen Palestinians were detained and several people were injured.

The unrest came two days after five Palestinians were killed in a day of violent clashes that erupted as Palestinians staged mass demonstrations to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the “catastrophe”--which is how Palestinians view the creation of the state of Israel.

On the main thoroughfare in traditionally Arab East Jerusalem on Saturday, Palestinian teenagers threw stones at Israeli border guards, injuring three of them and damaging cars parked nearby, Jerusalem police spokesman Shmulik Ben-Ruby said. Eighteen Palestinians were detained for questioning.

In Hebron, about 50 Palestinians shouting “Allahu akbar”--God is Great--threw stones and firebombs at Israeli soldiers on the demarcation line between the Israeli- and Palestinian-controlled parts of the city. Israeli soldiers fired percussion bombs to disperse them.

Israel radio reported that a woman and her infant child were slightly injured when rocks were thrown at their car near Nablus. The two were taken to a nearby hospital.
