General Automation Inc. said Monday it has asked the Securities and Exchange Commission for an extension to file its second-quarter report, and expects it will report a “significant” loss.

The Irvine company, which provides software support services, said that after an internal audit, it began to question the manner in which it accounts for deferred revenue. The company said it needs additional time to assess the accounting procedure.

During the second quarter a year ago, General Automation reported net income of $134,000, or 2 cents a share, on revenues of $9.8 million.
