As part of its celebration of national Public Works Week, city officials will offer guided tours of the newly renovated Public Services Building today.

The 52,000-square-foot building, whose renovation was completed last year, houses the Public Works Department’s facilities, street, electrical and tree maintenance divisions.

Today’s open house will also include a tree planting ceremony and displays of past and present accomplishments, said Rick Blackburn, a management analyst with the department.

The open house will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Public Services Building, 9505 W. Jefferson Blvd.

On Tuesday, the department played host to 70 middle school science students in an “egg drop” exercise, in which students put raw eggs into homemade contraptions designed to keep eggs from breaking when dropped 30 feet from a balcony.

Specialized public works equipment was exhibited Tuesday in front of City Hall, Blackburn said.
