School District Raises Math Standards for All Students

The El Segundo Unified School District has beefed up math standards for students in every grade level and will require all high school students to pass algebra--starting with the graduating class of 2002.

Supt. Bill Watkins said the school board adopted the state Board of Education’s academic standards, which specify what math classes and how much math students in each grade level should be taking. Additionally, he said the board adopted a policy that requires every student who enters high school--beginning this fall--to take algebra.

He said 85% of El Segundo students meet that requirement, but the district wanted to ensure that all students took algebra.

“Our goal overall is to offer for students a more enriched academic program,” Watkins said. “Requiring higher levels of mathematics in all grades will help achieve that.”
