Cindra and Alan Ladd Jr., Lyn and Norman Lear and Olivia Newton-John hosted a “Tea on the Green” and afternoon of children’s poetry on May 9 to raise funds for the Children’s Health Environmental Coalition. Guests including U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer, John Travolta and Kelly Preston, and Robert Guillaume turned out for the event at the Santa Monica home of Dru and Howard Alphson. The event raised $80,000 for the organization.

The coalition was founded by Nancy and Jim Chuda in memory of their daughter Colette who died at age 5 of a rare, nongenetic cancer. It works to educate and mobilize the public regarding environmental health risks to children. The Luminaires Juniors, a support group for the Doheny Eye Institute, staged a South Seas dinner dance benefit featuring a Polynesian show and a silent auction on May 8 at the Bel Air Bay Club. Net proceeds of $90,000 for the institute make this the Luminaires’ most successful benefit since the group formed in 1976.S

Thirteen young designers got to show their stuff before an audience of more than 1,000 fashion industry and entertainment executives and other guests at the Otis College of Art and Design’s 16th annual Critics Award Fashion Show on May 9 at the Beverly Hilton. The sold-out event, honoring fashion designer Todd Oldham and Dan Romanelli of Warner Bros., raised $900,000 for scholarships for design students.

A family brunch on May 17 at Sony Pictures Plaza celebrated the 10th anniversary of L.A.’s BEST (Better Educated Students for Tomorrow) and raised $140,000 for programs that serve 5,000 city schoolchildren served by the organization’s After School Enrichment Program.

The Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America netted $100,000 at the Nissan CCFA Golf Classic on May 11 at El Caballero Country Club in Tarzana. The foundation sponsors medical research, education and patient-support programs.
