From Times Wire Reports

Lost for eight days in the dense, swampy woods of the northernmost part of the state, John C. Johnson said aggressive mosquitoes were the most dangerous wildlife he encountered. Johnson, 69, got lost May 15 in the Northwest Angle, about 350 miles north of Minneapolis, while gathering logs. He eventually found his way to a road about five miles away, where motorists found him. He survived by eating waterlily roots. Clad in jeans, a short-sleeve shirt, ball cap and running shoes, Johnson survived nighttime temperatures in the 40s by sheltering inside hollow stumps and covering himself with bark. He told family members he heard search dogs and volunteers looking for him, and shouted until he was hoarse but could not find his way to them.
