Gingrich Says Israel Would Get Aid Hearing
The U.S. Congress would consider an Israeli request for $1 billion to help offset potential security risks from the transfer of more West Bank land to the Palestinians, U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Monday.
“In the past, Americans have always been helpful when there’s an opportunity to expand peace. . . . I think you’ll find we’ll be helpful again,” the Georgia Republican said in Israel.
A spokeswoman for Gingrich confirmed remarks that he made to the newspaper Haaretz saying he would “certainly consider” giving the aid on an emergency basis as part of a peace agreement.
Israeli media have said that during a visit to Washington this month, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu discussed the need for $1 billion to help pay for bypass roads and other security measures.
