An Eagle Scout’s sign project has boosted the educational role of a native-plant garden at Golden West Community College.

Robert Grimes, the 15-year-old son of Golden West chemistry professor Carol Grimes, organized the project to paint and place 90 identifying signs among the plants and flowers in the college’s Native California Garden.

The garden, scheduled to open next spring, will include an astronomy area and amphitheater, and offer a scenic backdrop for campus gatherings. Its main role will be to educate students and the public about indigenous plants.

Robert also supervised the installation of a 24-foot bench in the garden greenhouse and solicited help from local businesses that donated supplies and food for the two dozen people who worked on the project.
