College Teachers Discuss Strike Vote

Share

Ventura County Community College District teachers have formed a committee whose members met this week for the first time to discuss a strike vote.

About 25 teachers from the county’s three community colleges met in Ventura late Tuesday with top officials of the American Federation of Teachers, the California Federation of Teachers and the Tri-County Central Labor Council.

The strike committee was formed earlier this month after college administrators rejected an independent fact finder’s contract settlement proposal. Teachers were also bitterly opposed to a vote by trustees to impose new working conditions while negotiations continue.

“We have to work up to a strike vote,” Larry Miller, president of the Ventura County Federation of College Teachers, said Wednesday. “It’s much more complex than I had imagined. The first thing we have to do is contact faculty and find out the mood.”

If the committee finds there is enough support, a strike vote could occur in August, Miller said. The strike committee will met again in mid-June.
