Armored Car Guard Wounded in Holdup

A bungled armored car holdup flared into a shootout that left a guard seriously wounded Friday and four suspects at large, authorities said.

Three guards from Thomas Nix Distributors were confronted as they were making a money delivery at the rear of a Food 4 Less warehouse store shortly after 8 a.m., said Los Angeles Police Sgt. Willie Guerrero.

The wounded guard, whose name was not released, was wearing a bulletproof vest when he was struck by a high-powered weapon. His wounds were not believed to be life-threatening, said city Fire Department spokesman Bob Collis.

The suspects fled in a Nissan 280Z, but not before dropping a bag of cash in the parking lot. Police say the suspects later abandoned the car and headed toward South Pasadena in a black Chevy Suburban with paper license plates.

“The suspects had high-powered weapons and should be considered armed and dangerous,” Guerrero said.
