Regarding “How to Avoid Bottleneck at San Francisco International” (Travel Insider, Sept. 13): Yes, Oakland International Airport is generally a much better bet than SFO for any traveler into the San Francisco Bay area. But a rental car is not the only way to get from Oakland into San Francisco.

For $4.75 each way, you can take a shuttle from the Oakland airport to the Coliseum/Oakland Airport BART station, and then take BART into San Francisco. It is much cheaper than driving, especially after factoring in the bridge toll and parking in the city. You do not have to hassle with the heavy traffic on the Bay Bridge, and it is usually faster. If your final destination is not within walking distance of a BART station, an inexpensive cab ride will take you to the door.
