Anaheim City Council

* BUS BENCHES: The council will consider accepting a bid from Heisler Landscape in Orange to buy and install bus benches at a cost of $99,720. Four companies responded to the city’s request. Heisler Landscape proposed the lowest bid. The city received a $100,000 grant from the Orange County Transportation Authority to supply non-advertising bus benches to complement its effort to beautify the community. The city will buy 180 benches that will be installed at various locations.

* HISTORICAL PRESERVATION: Trustees will hear from architects and engineers about the possibility of preserving Villa Park Elementary School’s 1918 buildings. Long abandoned and in deteriorating condition, the three buildings sit in the middle of the current elementary school. Some community members are trying to save the buildings in some form, while administrators worry they may pose a danger to students if the issue is not resolved.

* EMPLOYEE RAISES: The council will consider a 3.5% salary increase for city employees, police management, mid-managers and the city administrator. Also proposed is a 0.5% increase in benefits, for a total compensation adjustment of 4%. If approved, the raises will be retroactive to Sept. 20 and would apply to 136 full-time employees.

Officials also recommended that police officers receive the same pay and benefit increases, in addition to a 1.5% salary raise also retroactive to Sept. 20, and a second 1.5% increase effective July 1 or earlier if the city receives money from the county bankruptcy settlement. The additional 3% for police officers is due to a pay raise promised in 1994 but never paid because the state took sales-tax money away from the city, resulting in the city’s inability to pay. Estimated cost to the city for the salary and benefit adjustments is $283,303.

Separately, they will hear the Marriott Corp.’s plans to build an assisted-living facility on the property.
