Bug Off

The weekend is finally here. It’s time to take off the suit, stretch the ol’ legs and become--presto! change-o!--nature person.

Lace up your hiking shoes and go for it. But if you’ll be out in woodsy areas, take some precautions against Lyme disease--caused by bacteria that can be carried through a tick bite.

1. Wear light-colored clothing (the better to see those pesky parasites). Think long, as in long pants and long-sleeved shirts, and wear a hat. Tuck your shirt inside your pants, and your pants inside your socks. 2. Use tick repellent on skin and on the cuffs of your pants and shirt.

3. Check pets for ticks as well.

Call your local or regional health department to find out if your area is at risk.
