* Los Angeles-based Spelling Entertainment Group Inc. reported a third-quarter net loss of $29.5 million, or 32 cents per share, on revenue of $157.1 million, compared with a net loss of $18.1 million, or 20 cents, on revenue of $108.5 million a year ago.

* Foodmaker Inc., the San Diego-based parent of Jack in the Box restaurant chain, reported record fiscal fourth-quarter earnings of $12.4 million, or 31 cents per share, compared with $9.6 million, or 24 cents, a year ago. Revenue rose to $290 million from $250 million last year.

* Venture capital investments in the first three quarters of 1998 rose 13% to a record $9.4 billion as high-technology transactions dominated new ventures, a report by San Francisco-based industry researcher VentureOne said.

* Federal prosecutors said 13 defendants had been indicted for allegedly defrauding customers of Symons Financial Group, a securities firm formerly located in Boca Raton, Fla., of more than $5 million. Among those named as defendants is Murray Goldenberg, president of Los Angeles-based First Colonial Ventures. Others include former Symons brokers and stock promoters in San Francisco and Las Vegas. The charges stem from a series of schemes including one in which Symons brokers allegedly took bribes to generate trading volume in the shares of First Colonial, causing the stock to trade at artificially high prices. The defendants were not immediately available for comment.
