Jailed Cali Cartel Drug Lord Slain

Jailed Colombian drug lord Helmer “Pacho” Herrera was killed by a gunman during a soccer game in a prison yard outside Cali, officials said. Herrera, 47, the No. 3 man in the Cali cartel, surrendered in September 1996 and began incriminating former associates. He was sentenced in March to 14 years in prison after confessing to drug smuggling and money laundering. The assailant, identified as Rafael Angel Uribe, 32, appeared to be “an acquaintance of Herrera because he greeted him first,” an official said.
