SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

The real estate brokerage founded by professional football Hall of Fame quarterback Roger Staubach will return to Los Angeles this week. Two years after Staubach Co.’s first short-lived L.A. office closed, the 21-year-old firm is trying again.

Veteran local tenant broker Robert Chavez will head Staubach Co.’s new Westwood office--the brokerage’s 26th nationwide--which will be responsible for Los Angeles and Ventura counties.

Chavez will own the new operation primarily in partnership with longtime Staubach partner Kevin Hayes, president and majority owner of the Dallas-based company’s operations in Southern California and three other Western states.

USC alum Chavez has spent much of his career with two locally based brokerages that specialize in representing tenants. After many years at Travers Realty, headed by high-profile broker Jim Travers, Chavez became a partner in Metrospace Corp., joining principals Jerry Porter and Matthew Miller.

In opening the new Staubach operation, Chavez is bringing broker Peter London with him from Metrospace. They’re also joined by veteran broker Bryan Lewitt, who worked in the previous Staubach L.A. office and has been working with Wolf Commercial.

Staubach Co.’s Hayes-headed Irvine operation, which employs more than 35 real estate professionals, had previously handled the L.A. territory.

Hayes’ group had opened a satellite office in downtown L.A. in 1994 as the local economy was starting to pull out of its long recession. But Staubach consolidated the operation into the Irvine office two years later after a series of personnel changes, Hayes noted.

Among Staubach’s more noteworthy clients with substantial L.A. County operations are Unihealth, Carsey-Werner, Catholic Healthcare and Sybase. Chavez and his new Staubach associates will presumably bring along some of their existing clients as well.
