PacifiCare Health Systems Inc. said president and chief executive Alan Hoops was named chairman of the managed-health-care company, replacing co-founder Terry Hartshorn.

Hoops, 51, will remain chief executive and will replace Hartshorn, 53, as chairman at the end of the year. Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Jeffrey Folick, 51, will become president while keeping the position of chief operating officer at the Santa Ana-based company.

Hoops joined PacifiCare, the largest U.S. operator of health maintenance organizations for Medicare members, in 1977. He was previously senior vice president and executive vice president before being named president and chief executive in 1993.

Hoops helped develop PacifiCare’s Secure Horizons plan, which serves members of Medicare, the government health program for the elderly.

Hartshorn will stay with the company as vice chairman and will help develop strategy. He helped found PacifiCare, one of the biggest managed health-care companies in California, in 1975.

Folick joined PacifiCare in 1989 as vice president of Secure Horizons and has been executive vice president and chief operating officer of the company since 1994.
