A Glam Goldmine

The product tie-ins to writer-director Todd Haynes’ “Velvet Goldmine” may prove more interesting than the film itself. Those in search of a little glam can check out Girl Cosmetics’ Velvet Goldmine collection premiering at Bloomingdale’s today and Saturday at the Sherman Oaks, Beverly Center, Newport Beach and Century City stores.

The makeup line was developed by Shawn Haynes (Todd’s brother), along with the film’s makeup artist, Peter King. The silver-and-gold glitter highlighter duo has a creamy base and a subtle sparkle that’s great for a night out at a club or a holiday party. A black kohl glitter pencil eyeliner is nice and soft. There are also four eye-shadow trios and six lip creams, and we love the slogan on the silvery packaging: “Tested on Rock Stars--Not Animals.” Girl Cosmetics, $10-$27. Also released to coincide with the film is music journalist Barney Hoskyns’ “GLAM!” (Pocket Books, $15). The tiny tome tells the story of the glam rock movement from Oscar Wilde to Ziggy Stardust to Liberace, Elton John and L.A.’s own Rodney Bingenheimer. And guess who wrote the foreword? Todd Haynes, of course.
