Online Consumers Say They Trust Net News

The Internet has held center stage for one of the biggest news stories of the year--the Monica Lewinsky scandal--and now more than 80% of U.S. online consumers say they trust Internet news outlets as much as they trust newspaper and television news sources, according to a survey by Jupiter Communications.

The results may surprise those who think of Matt Drudge’s gossipy Drudge Report as the quintessential online news source. But the New York new-media research firm also found that 7% of the 2,200 people surveyed believe online news is more reliable than its pre-Information Age counterparts.
