Faced with a financial crisis, the YWCA of North Orange County will soon decide whether to sell its headquarters at 321 N. Pomona Ave.
The organization, which has served the needs of women and children since 1928, is struggling with more than $230,000 in debt, including a $105,000 mortgage. Task force YWCA2000 was enlisted in September to look at the agency’s financial situation and recommended the sale. The board voted Tuesday to postpone a final decision until its Dec. 15 meeting.
If the YWCA decides to sell the house, it would relocate to a smaller office in Fullerton, said Sara Bergstrom, president of the YWCA board. The eight battered women who stay in the house would need a new place to live. The agency’s child development center, which was housed next door, shut down earlier this month due to staffing problems.
Bergstrom said the YWCA will not sell the house or cut its programming if there are better options.
“Nobody wants to sell the house,” Bergstrom said, “but sometimes we have to make tough decisions.”
