Big Guys Up Front Like the Big Plays

One statistic that reinforces the reputation of UCLA’s big-play offense this season is the 155 plays the Bruins have had of at least 10 yards. To put this in perspective, consider that USC has only 171 first downs total, despite having played one more game.

For offensive linemen such as guard Oscar Cabrera, having big-play potential can be a huge asset.

“I wouldn’t say that it’s something that we’re used to, but it definitely helps a lot,” Cabrera said about the Bruins, who have had 63 plays for 20 yards or more, including 19 touchdowns. “Us lineman, we try to score on every play, but the big play is great. When you get it, it helps [linemen] get a little rest and save some energy so you can be ready for a big drive.”

UCLA offensive lineman Kris Farris was named to the Walter Camp All-American team, but Cade McNown was not. Tim Couch of Kentucky was the quarterback.

Coach Bob Toledo excused several players, including wide receiver Brian Poli-Dixon and linebacker Tony White, from practice Wednesday to allow them to travel to be with family for Thanksgiving. Cornerback Jason Bell (ankle) and defensive end Kenyon Coleman (knee) did not practice because of injuries. Tailback DeShaun Foster practiced after sitting out two days because of strep throat.

The last time UCLA lost a game was a 30-24 defeat to Tennessee at the Rose Bowl on Sept. 6, 1997. Since then, UCLA has won 20 in a row, making that loss difficult to remember.

“It’s been a while,” UCLA safety Larry Atkins said. “It’s something that we don’t want to happen again.”
