San Diego Too Much for the Matadors, 3-1

San Diego scored twice in the first half and went on to beat Cal State Northridge, 3-1, in a nonconference women’s soccer match Wednesday night at San Diego.

The Matadors (2-7) scored three minutes into the second half on an unassisted goal by Carrie Anderson.

Sherice Partling scored 29 seconds later for San Diego (6-3-1).

Jessica Crothers and Alison Benoit scored in the first half.

Goalkeeper Jenny Willemse stopped four shots for Northridge, which has lost 17 of 20 games dating to last season.

Linfield 2, The Master’s 1--Stephanie Schuster scored unassisted on a rebound in the 88th minute for the Mustangs to prevent a shutout in a nonconference game at Linfield (4-6).

MEN’S WATER POLO

Ventura 13, Valley 10--Jason Perry scored five goals and Tim Rhodes scored three times for the Pirates (7-4, 2-0) in a Western State Conference game at Valley.

Sophomore Kyle Finley had eight saves for the Pirates.

WOMEN’S WATER POLO

Valley 12, Ventura 9--Shareen Pena had two two-point goals and Stephanie Hammer had three goals for the Monarchs (5-5) in a Western State Conference opener at Valley.

The Monarchs (5-5) trailed, 3-2, in the first quarter when Kareena Leiva scored a two-point goal, and Ventura never caught up.

Melissa Minkey had 11 saves for Valley.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

USC def. Pepperdine, 15-2, 15-12, 16-14--Jamie Hill had 10 kills and five blocks for the Waves (5-5) at Pepperdine in their final tuneup before opening West Coast Conference play Friday.

The Trojans (8-3) are ranked eighth in the American Volleyball Coaches Assn. poll and 13th by Volleyball Magazine.

Wisconsin def. Iowa, 15-7, 8-15, 15-10, 15-11--Sherisa Livingston of Wisconsin, a 1998 graduate of Royal High, had 12 kills and five blocks for the sixth-ranked Badgers in a Big Ten Conference match at Iowa.

Livingston, who had a hitting percentage of .667, had three consecutive blocks to close out the victory for Wisconsin (13-1, 3-0).

Iowa is 6-6, 0-3.

Victor Valley def. Canyons, 15-2, 15-5, 15-8--Mary Keen had nine kills and Wendy Cook had 27 assists, but the Cougars (2-2) lost at Victor Valley.
