Animal Shelters
Each year in the United States, more than 10 million dogs and cats are turned over to animal shelters because their owners no longer want them. Of these, approximately 65% do not find a home and are euthanized.
We in Ventura County are not exempt from the pet overpopulation problem. Because the Humane Society of Ventura County will not euthanize one animal to free up kennel space for another we are often completely full and have a hard time finding good homes for all the animals that come through our door. The shelter staff encourages everyone who would be a responsible pet owner to consider adopting one of our dogs during October, which is National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month.
Ojai Day--Oct. 17--would be an excellent time to visit the shelter. We will hold 10K and 5K runs, a dog-walk and open house that day to benefit our spay and neuter clinic. For more information, please call 646-6505 or 656-5031.
