Williamsburg Polishes the Silver
Hundreds of 17th, 18th and 19th century English, Scottish and Irish silver pieces went on display, most for the first time, this weekend to open a gallery at the Colonial Williamsburg living history village in Virginia.
“Treasure Quest: Great Silver Collections From Colonial Williamsburg” runs through December 1999. It includes silver and early English silver plate ranging from flatware, skewers and marrow scoops to Scottish silver chalices, dinnerware and tea sets. Among the notable items are an elaborate 18th century epergne (ornamental stand used as a centerpiece) and an 18th century racing cup produced for the Richmond Races in Yorkshire.
The items, donated by several private collectors, are in the new Mary Jewett Gaiser Silver Gallery in the DeWitt Wallace Gallery, open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day except Tuesday. Information: telephone (757) 220-7724.
