Dozens of volunteers for the county’s food bank took a break from helping feed the needy for an early celebration of National Food Share Week on Tuesday.

Local hunger activists gathered at Ventura County Government Center courtyard to kick off National Food Bank Week, which begins Sunday.

“When you’re hungry, you can’t be happy; you can’t be strong,” said Supervisor Kathy Long, who attended the event.

“If you’re a mother, it breaks your heart when you cannot adequately feed your children.”

Founded in 1978, Food Share collects and stores donated food and related commodities and distributes it to to more than 200 certified charities that help feed the needy. Last year, 7 million pounds were distributed locally. Each month, the food bank serves 70,000 county residents--more than half of them children under 18 or seniors 65 years or older.
