Funds Sought for Treating Baby’s Cancer

Share

The plight of two Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies who live in Garden Grove and need an experimental medical procedure for their newborn girl has sparked a fund-raising effort.

Roman Anthony and Kim Moreno, both 33, plan to take their 3-month-old daughter, Tori, to Houston for an experimental cancer treatment. Tori was born with a brain stem tumor that cannot be treated with surgery or chemotherapy. A doctor in Texas has developed a nontoxic chemical therapy with a 33% success rate, and the Morenos plan to try it.

If the procedure fails, Tori is not expected to survive.

The costs for the treatment range from $7,000 to $8,000 a month, Roman Moreno said, and it can take up to two years.

The Morenos’ health plan will not cover out-of-state treatment; they have turned to the public and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Relief Fund for assistance.

Deputies plan to sell and raffle tickets and calendars to help pay for the procedure, Moreno said. The department also is accepting donations, which can be made payable to Sheriff’s Relief Fund No. 235, 1151 S. Colima Road, Whittier CA, 90604, Attn: Sandy Gilweit.
