Airport Assn. Asks for Customs Agent

A resolution seeking permanent United States Customs Service officials at Van Nuys Airport was unanimously passed by the Van Nuys Airport Assn., which represents about 100 businesses at the airport.

The request, made Tuesday, needs approval from U.S. Customs Port Director Thomas Winkowski in coordination with the U.S. Customs Headquarters in Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Customs Management Center in Long Beach, said U.S. Customs agent Arthur Gainer.

“Having customs available to business travelers here at Van Nuys is just one way we can help relieve the capacity problems at LAX and make it easy for people to do business in Los Angeles,” said association President Harold Lee.

If customs services were available at Van Nuys Airport, Lee said international travelers would no longer have to land at Los Angeles International Airport to go through customs before continuing on to Van Nuys.

Currently, a U.S. Customs inspector is on call and serves Van Nuys and Burbank Airports when given advance notice of international arrivals, officials said.
