Dancers Help Dedicate New Ballerina Stamp
Just about every American icon, sports figure and theme is represented on U.S. postage stamps. A ballerina, dressed in white, performing the step en pointe in an attitude derriere pose on a black background, is the latest to grace a U.S. Postal Service stamp.
Students from St. Joseph’s Ballet school in Santa Ana and members of the New York City Ballet helped present the new ballerina stamp Tuesday at the Orange County Performing Arts Center in Costa Mesa.
The stamp dedication was in conjunction with ceremonies celebrating the 50th anniversary of the New York City Ballet, which opened its Southern California engagement Tuesday at the center.
“We are honored that the U.S. Postal Service has selected New York City Ballet to participate in the issuance of this beautiful stamp,” said Peter Martins, the ballet’s master in chief.
“We have added something uniquely American to the proud heritage of classical dance.”
Said Pam Gilbert, U.S. Postal Service vice president of retail:
“Those of us who have tried to stand on our toes--who had the desire but not the talent--appreciate more than others the beauty, grace and difficulty of the most basic ballet steps.
“This postage stamp conveys the elegance and refinement that is ballet.”
The stamp is available at any post office.
