Old Club Lingerie Site Returns to Its Rock Soul

Share

I’ll never forget the night I paid 10 bucks for a 7-Up at a newly revamped Club Lingerie. It was 1995 and the former seminal nightclub had been bought by Korean investors who clearly wanted their money back. The club’s rock ‘n’ roll spirit was noosed, and in its place was an ‘80s-style discotheque--more tacky than techy--sporting endless rows of faux cowhide love seats (that were identical to those at a neighboring dry cleaners). Slowly but surely, the Sunset Boulevard club began slouching its way back toward Tinsel Town proper, bringing in outside promoters to put the dance back in its pants. Since Lingerie’s roots were meant for rockin’, the club--with new operators--has done a complete 360 and is relaunching this week as the dance club Id, with an all-new look and all-new promotions. Word is there’s a brand-new stage and sound system in place, with live music a big part of upcoming plans. . . .

Speaking of revamping, Good Bar, which will be housed at the old Bar One site in West Hollywood, should be opening any minute now. This might just become the new hot spot. . . . Fenix at the Argyle hasn’t cooled off and, in fact, the lines look like they’re growing--at least on Friday and Saturday, when the hotel club is the hottest ticket in town. . . .

Same is true for Thursday nights at 360 in Hollywood, although why folks are clamoring to get up the elevator to the penthouse party still remains a mystery (much ado about much ado). . . .

Nearly everything about Saturday’s relaunching party for Bikini Magazine was a disaster, except for the performance by Melky Sedeck. The brother and sister duo got in the soulful tunes “Raw,” “High Heel Shoes” and “Love Jones” before the entire event, with long lines outside, was unplugged by ye olde LAPD and fire marshal (maybe, if promoters just started inviting them to all the good parties, we could all just get along). Among those who got lost in the riot-gear shuffle were party hostess Rose McGowan and beau Marilyn Manson, whose limo couldn’t get around the ruckus, as well as Cameron Diaz and Drew Barrymore. . . .

Tenacious D’s Jack Black pulled out a recent copy of Calendar Weekend and read all about himself in our very own Club Buzz column during his show last week at the Key Club. The actor-musician-comic artiste was very impressed with his press. . . .

Rumors are flying about Grand Ville’s imminent demise, although there’s no solid evidence that the long-running Thursday night strip-dance club at the 7969 club will actually close. Its longtime resident deejay Ben “Baller” Yang has picked up some side gigs, including Fast Times Saturdays at Dragonfly, and is planning a Halloween blowout with Elephant Ride, Dollshead, and dancing. Yang, who already has a night inked for Id, has been hired to launch Liquid Eden, a new Tuesday night dance club by Mark Bruser and pals, which kicks off next week. Yang is known for giving the people what they want, and that means more hip-hop, old school and soul. . . .

Speaking of Tuesday, according to one our Clubland spies, a new joint called 829 Bistro, located up the street from the Gate on La Cienega Boulevard, is packed on Tuesdays and Thursdays with the Beautiful People (you know the ones I’m talking about, one eye in the mirror and the other on what you’re wearing).
