Armed Officers to Patrol High Schools

Share

Joining with the Police Department, the Ventura Unified school board has approved an $80,000 plan to hire two officers to work at the city’s high schools.

Armed “school resource officers” will work at Ventura High, Buena High and the district’s continuation campuses.

The officers will serve as liaisons with the school principals and staff and the Police Department. They will also provide informal counseling to students, work in gang suppression and work with students who have probation officers.

Funding will be $40,000 per officer for the first year, a cost to be shared by the Police Department and the district, which approved the program at its meeting Tuesday night. The program could be extended for two years, with $5,000 annual increases.
