Yellow Brick Mode for ‘Oz’ Fans

There’s no place like Dana Point for the annual International Wizard of Oz Club Convention, according to the Scarecrows, Dorothys and Cowardly Lions gathering for Saturday’s event.

The Oz enthusiasts from Southern California and beyond will meet in Dana Point to celebrate their love of the classic fantasy story and buy and sell Oz collectibles and memorabilia.

The Wizard of Oz story originated with L. Frank Baum’s classic book “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” and was permanently etched on the American psyche with the 1939 MGM movie “The Wizard of Oz,” starring Judy Garland.

“We love all aspects of Oz: its authors and illustrators, and Oz-related collectible items like books and artwork,” says Robyn Knudson, chairwoman of the convention.

The International Wizard of Oz Club has 2,000 members worldwide and has held its annual convention in Dana Point for the past 16 years, Knudson said.

Saturday’s convention runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Dana Point Community House, 24642 San Juan Avenue. Admission is $15 for adults and $7.50 for children and includes lunch. Costumes are not required.
