California’s competitive electricity market turned 6 months old at the end of September with 100,742 participants, an increase of nearly 15,000 from the month before. That represents about 1% of the nearly 10 million customers in the areas once exclusively serviced by the state’s investor-owned utilities. The customers that have switched to a new provider use 9.3% of the electricity consumed in the area served by Southern California Edison, Pacific Gas & Electric and San Diego Gas & Electric. The majority of the switchers have been large industrial users.
