Republicans and Impeachment

Share

Here’s a thought for Democrats in general and Clinton apologists in specific. If the polls are right and if the American voter truly wants to “move on” and get this behind us, does that voter know there’s a quick and easy way to do that? Vote Republican. The recent votes in the House in favor of impeachment certainly indicate that one political party is moving along quickly and one is dragging its feet, overwhelmingly embarrassed by its leader’s disgusting, pathetic, small-minded actions.

Everything Bill Clinton has done has been to keep himself in office and out of jail. At least his metaphorical mentor, Tricky Dick, obstructed justice to cover up a recognizable crime, burglary. This guy broke numerous laws and continues to endanger our constitutional form of government because he couldn’t keep his zipper up. How truly sad. Perhaps if all the Democrats are tossed out of office, the presidency would change hands by Thanksgiving. Now that’s moving on!

We can stop the impeachment inquiry next month. Vote Democratic and reverse the Republican majority in Congress. Send the Republicans a message that they must accede to the will of their constituents instead of the religious right, which is trying to turn this country into a theocracy. Don’t think they can’t, if we become complacent and say it cannot be done.

I am offended by news reports that attribute continuing public support for the president solely to “pocketbook” concerns. Some of us still believe in government of, for and by the people; I deeply resent the heavy-handed attempt by a clique of right-wing extremists to wrest control of the government from the duly elected president.

Having watched the genesis of the Clinton scandal from its beginnings up to the present point, I can say truthfully that events have not altered my original viewpoint one iota. I felt then and continue to feel that politicians and lawyers are genetically predisposed toward seizing advantage at any cost. The high-flown rhetoric, the specious and disingenuous arguments notwithstanding, this is not about preserving the Constitution or a search for the truth or anything remotely that lofty. It is about advantage. In the end, we will not be left with a stronger Constitution, a citizenry better served or even the truth--we will be left only with a superior strategy.

If President Clinton didn’t want to be shot down, why did he supply the ammunition?
