Dog Attacks

Re “Man’s Best Friend a Worst Nightmare,” Oct. 12.

Thanks for bringing this terrible crime to our attention. We must act to stop this outrage of dog attacks. Because of the way a dog’s teeth, mouth and muscles are made, it is easy for a dog to damage tendons causing permanent disability, lifelong pain, mental anguish and huge medical cost.

I love dogs. One of my best friends is a dog. But I strongly believe that dog owners must be responsible for their dog’s actions. I would ask that we pass a law that would attach criminal liability to the owners of these “land sharks.” This law would be applied in relation to the severity of the attack.

Let us get together and put some pain in the pocket of these outrageous dog owners.

A person buying or adopting a dog should be required to get minimum basic pet care instruction. You’d think this was only common sense, but it’s not the case in Los Angeles. You should sign a mandatory form outlining obligations to the animal and the community before you can get or renew the dog’s license.

And Animal Regulation needs to be split. A separate enforcement unit needs to be created to police the humans who cause these problems. This would function like our parking enforcement arm of the police. Fines and fees would make it self-sustaining, and the manpower would be there to enforce existing cruelty, noise, leash, and license violations. More importantly, Animal Regulation officers could then focus on their primary function: the care and humane treatment of animals.
