Toddler Hit by Car Is in Critical Condition
An 18-month-old boy was in critical condition Sunday after he wandered into Saticoy Street and was struck by a car, police said.
Luis Fernando Arteaga suffered severe head injuries in the 2:30 p.m. incident at Saticoy Street and Mason Avenue and was taken to Childrens Hospital of Los Angeles, said Officer Robert Ward of the LAPD’s Valley Traffic Division.
The driver was not charged, Ward said.
Several witnesses told authorities the child--who is under 2 feet tall--moved suddenly into the roadway and would not have been visible to the driver, Ward said.
The boy was not thrown far, nor were skid marks on the road, Ward said, meaning that speed was probably not a factor in the accident.
Luis’s mother told authorities she looked away for a moment while doing her laundry in her apartment on Saticoy Street and when she turned around, her son was gone, Ward said.
