Free Speech

* Judy Jarvis (“Have We Sold Out Feminists, or Forgotten How to Call a Jerk a Jerk?” Commentary, Oct. 11) was a breath of fresh air. Our increasing intolerance as a society of “offensive” communication and ideas and our eagerness to legislate private social interaction between individuals are daily providing an increasingly repressive atmosphere.
Who doesn’t avoid bringing up unpopular, controversial issues in the workplace, in the college classroom, with casual acquaintances, or even with friends? Who isn’t constantly afraid of “being taken wrong” by the opposite sex?
The most ironic part of it all is that many of those who think that this social environment is “progress” were part of the Free Speech Movement. Was that so long ago?
