Tutoring Program Called a Success
School officials are calling a tutoring program that gives extra help with reading and writing to students in grades 3 through 8 a success.
Now in its second year, the program is being taught by 38 teachers trained to meet the needs of remedial students, said Martha Hernandez, the Oxnard Elementary School District’s interim administrator for curriculum and instruction.
Hernandez said that 88% of students in grades 3 to 6 and 14% of those in junior high school have shown improvement as a result of the tutoring.
“Classroom teachers have given testimonials about how a child’s entire life is changed by learning to read,” Hernandez said. “Students gain self-confidence and are better able to participate in all aspects of their educational experience.”
The district has had an early literacy intervention program for at-risk first-graders since 1996, according to Hernandez.
