Fair in Oxnard Will Help At-Risk Youth

A program designed for at-risk youth and their families is staging an arts and crafts fair Nov. 14.

The South Oxnard Challenge Project, a three-year research program funded by the Ventura County Board of Corrections in cooperation with Oxnard and various nonprofit agencies, is hoping community groups will use its Multi-Cultural Community Arts and Crafts Faire to raise funds.

“This is a great opportunity for neighborhood councils and watch patrols to make money . . . and provide support to the youth and families of South Oxnard,” said Pat Simmons, an outreach worker with the program, which serves about 160 families.

Youths in the program are given an opportunity to make amends to the community by participating in service projects or making restitution to victims, said Carmen Flores, the project’s grant manager. The program also offers them recreation activities, family therapy, parenting workshops, anger management classes and tutoring.

“Another goal of the program is to bring activities to the South Oxnard community,” said Flores. “We’re trying to generate interest in the community, get people involved in coming together.”

Booths are still available to rent at the fair, which will be held at 200 E. Bard Road from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. For information, call 271-9734.
