Box Office Guru

* What it is: Nothing but net -- grosses, that is. Gitesh Pandya has been tracking them for the last 10 years, and now he has a vehicle through which he can share them. His way with numbers, however, isn’t something that’s likely to pay off soon: He pretty much makes zipputting out his site. But he’s confident advertising will out.

* Comments: “I thought I was the only crazy goofball who loved box-office numbers. I was amazed there were others,” Pandya said. Well, let me tell you, he’s selling himself - and his site - short. Yes, there are numbers. Enough to make you a little twitchy, to be honest. But he has an equal gift with words, and his twice-weekly analyses are enough of a draw for us math dopes. For non-pros, Pandya has a way of breaking things down so you can understand. And for pros, well, you probably already know all about the Guru.

Flick Picks

* What it is: A user-review site by David Nolan, a jack-of-all-trades in Mission Viejo, and Web Commanders in Corona. Apparently, there’s not a lot of money to be made by reader-review sites, and if there is, someone should tell Nolan, because he’s not in on thesecret. In fact, he pays -in “sweat equity,” anyway - to keep the site afloat.

* Comments: Just your average Joes telling you what they think about the movies. Viewers rate ‘em, sometimes have little to say. All pretty straightforward. There are also lists of the 25, 50 and 75 best and worst films as ranked by users. It’s an interesting idea, even if itproves that most moviegoers are actually less skilled in the ways of the language than your average professional critic.
