Council Asks Park Service to Delay Landfill Permit
Hoping to eke out last-minute concessions, the City Council voted Wednesday night to ask the National Park Service not to grant a permit for the Calabasas Landfill until it meets with officials from local cities.
The timeline for action, however, is short. Two weeks ago, the park service released a massive environmental assessment of the landfill and declared its intention to grant a permit within 30 days. The permit is required by federal law to allow the landfill to continue operating on park service land.
According to the service, Calabasas Landfill is the only dump still operating on national park land, in this case the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area.
The council voted to consult with the regional Council of Governments, whose members include Calabasas, Agoura Hills, Hidden Hills, Westlake Village and Malibu.
