Police Employees Form Separate Union
Saying that their union was not responsive enough to their concerns about salaries and benefits, non-sworn employees of the Tustin Police Department have formed a new labor group.
The Tustin Police Support Services Assn. represents the Police Department’s 29 employees in communications, community and police services, parking control and property and records administration.
City Manager William A. Huston, who approved the new unit’s creation in August, said, “You want to avoid creating too many units, but in this situation it was in the best interest for it to be created.”
The non-sworn employees voted 25 to 1 to separate from the Tustin Municipal Employees Assn.
John Adams, a consultant who has represented Tustin’s police officers for 25 years in negotiations with the city, also will represent the new union.
“It’s more of a complete process now,” Adams said of working with the entire police staff. “Brings the team home, so to speak. But a lot of work needs to be done.”
