A 30-year-old golfer was released from the hospital Friday, a day after falling during a swing and impaling himself with his own golf club shaft.

Richard Passwater of Salt Lake City was on the fourth hole of the Sierra La Verne Country Club shortly after noon Thursday when the accident occurred. As Passwater swung, the head of his golf club to caught in a chain-link fence.

“He fell and was pierced in the waist by his headless club,” La Verne Police Lt. Carl Brubaker said. “It went in the front and came out of his back.”

Passwater’s friends dashed him in a golf cart to the pro shop to get help. “The proprietor looked down and saw a golf club protruding out of the guy’s back,” Brubaker said.

Paramedics treated Passwater, who was airlifted to St. Francis Medical Center in Lynwood. As they moved him, he reportedly told paramedics that he wanted the club back.
