Residents OK Funds to Buy Medical Plaza
Anaheim Hills residents in three Mello-Roos districts have approved transferring $5 million in assessment money to buy a medical center that will be converted to a police substation and space for city and community services.
The city will pay $1 million toward the $6.3-million price for the Anaheim Memorial Medical Plaza. Developer fees will cover the remaining $375,000.
Councilman Bob Zemel, who has pushed for a community center for canyon residents since 1985, called the project “a long time coming.”
Homeowners overwhelmingly approved buying the 47,000-square-foot medical plaza building, which is on six acres along East Santa Ana Canyon Road.
Because the assessment money had already been collected from homeowners for public improvements, residents voted Oct. 15 on whether to redirect the money for the community facility.
City officials had originally proposed building a police substation on a nearby vacant site on Dream Street. But that would have cost more than $8 million, officials said.
The City Council last week approved the medical plaza purchase. The site will be ready for occupancy by the city early next year.
