Rush-Hour Collision Injures 3, Halts Traffic

A collision between a big-rig and two vans snarled morning rush-hour traffic Monday on the San Diego Freeway.

A 30-year-old Irvine man was driving his Honda van south just past Culver Drive about 8:35 a.m. when he spotted a piece of metal in the road, California Highway Patrol Officer JoAnn O’Hair said.

When he slowed to avoid it, a truck towing two empty trailers behind him couldn’t slow down in time and rammed the van, O’Hair said. A Ford van following the big-rig in the far-right lane then hit the truck, O’Hair said.

The Honda’s driver sustained a broken nose and his year-old son broke his leg in the crash. Both were taken to Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center in Mission Viejo, O’Hair said. The driver of the Ford, a 31-year-old Santa Ana man, went to Irvine Medical Center with minor injuries. The truck driver, a 33-year-old from Crestline, was unhurt.

The accident closed the freeway’s southbound lanes for about 30 minutes, she said.

The CHP didn’t cite anyone in the crash, O’Hair said, but officers are still investigating.
