Five Los Angeles educators received $10,000 Milken Family Foundation Jewish Educator Awards at ceremonies this week.

The award winners are kindergarten teacher Deborah Norwood from the Stephen S. Wise School in Los Angeles; librarian Susan Dubin from the Valley Beth Shalom School in Encino; Rabbi Laurence Scheindlin, headmaster of Sinai Akiba Academy in Los Angeles; fourth-grade teacher Joan Cohen from Hillel Hebrew Academy in Beverly Hills, and teacher Shira Smiles from Yeshiva University of Los Angeles Girls High School.

The award is given annually to 160 educators in 38 states who are able to communicate with and nurture a love of learning in children, Milken Family Foundation President Lowell Milken said. “We also look for educators who can infuse in young people the larger and deeper understanding of who we are as Jews, of our people’s history and destiny,” he said.
